Visibility / Location:
The Haunt is located only a couple of hundred yards north of highway 136 in Rantoul. 136 is the major east west road running through the city. The GPS directions take you directly to the spacious parking lot. There is no signage on 136 and when I arrived they had not yet illuminated the sign on the front of the site. Even when lighted, it is not easy to see the sign from 136.
The line for the haunt is in a covered area under the roof of the building. They have also hung a tarp to enclose the area and provide additional protection from the wind and rain. Propane heaters are available in case of low temperatures. There are video screens playing scenes that may be from music video clips but it is unclear since there was no sound. There was no other entertainment or actors wandering the area but it is early in the season and the wait was very short. At the end of the line is a short rules briefing by one of the staff then you enter a introduction area before the Haunt. This area contains the signature Baldwin Asylum façade shown on their website. Patrons are grouped and distancing guidelines are in place. Due to Covid restrictions groups are not combined no matter how small the group is.
Tickets can be purchased online by timeslot. General admission is $20.
From ticketing to the rules area was 10 minutes. The rules took about 2 minutes and the introduction scene required another 10 minutes to move to the front of the line. Groups were well separated and there did not appear to be any need for checkpoints while in the haunt. The haunt itself required 17 minutes to complete.
Since people move through haunted attractions at different rates, your time will vary. Note: The time shown here represents the actual time spent moving forward through the attraction. Time spent waiting in queue lines, staging areas, intro scenes, rules rooms and when traffic jams cause patrons to come to a halt, has been subtracted.
LPR Score = 3.401
LPR stands for Length/Price Ratio. It represents perceived value of an event, by comparing length vs price of admission. Higher numbers represent more value per dollar. Actual quality and/or entertainment value of an event are not factors in this calculation. Click Here to see how this event compares to others visited this year by the staff of HauntedIllinois.com.
The scare factor was high. The scares mostly consisted of jump scares and noises. In addition, there were air blasts, dark areas, and some scenes. There was some gore as to be expected from a medically themed haunt. There were no crawls or squeeze areas.
The flow through the haunt was very smooth. Groups were well separated and there was no need to wait for patrons ahead and other groups did not catch up from behind.
The experience begins in the impressively detailed introduction area. The facades are seamlessly integrated into the room. At the entrance a guardian opened the door to begin the haunt. The Asylum maintained a cohesive theme throughout which really added to the overall experience. The backstory is that This was an insane asylum where horrifying experiments were carried out on the residents. This lends itself well to a number of scares and the haunt is at its best when it is focused around the backstory. During the haunt it is possible to see some wonderfully detailed set pieces however most of the haunt was quite dark making it hard to appreciate the work. I also had the feeling the costumes were impressive but again it was too hard to see. More lighting in some areas would have added to the ambiance. Actors were well positioned for attacks and stayed in character. One dark area simply had someone laughing in the background which was surprisingly effective. When the haunt got away from the main theme was when it was at its weakest. In one area the guests entered a series of small rooms with red white and black striped walls. Each room you enter has only one other exit. This did not seem to fit the overall theme and the number of rooms went on too long. There are several well placed animatronics in the haunt and unexpected air blasts which provided some of the best scares. In one case I was distracted examining one of the set pieces and an actor came up directly behind me. I have a low startle response but this frightened me. There is a reason Baldwin Asylum is highly renowned in the state and it does not disappoint.
