Visibility / Location:
Because of GPS directions I had no problem finding the street where the Haunt was located, however as you get close to the location there is a sign that says the road is closed to traffic. While it is obvious the closure is for the haunted house there was no signage indicating parking. After circling the location twice I simply parked on the street. Later I asked and discovered that parking is at the VFW hall just north of the attraction. The parking lot can be accessed from N Elizabeth street just east of the attraction.
The attraction used a very efficient system to group people together and assign the group a number. The group number would be called to the entrance. In general they are trying to get groups of about 6 so smaller groups may be combined. This allowed patrons to wander around the area and interact with the actors. There was also food vendors and some sales tents. In addition they were showing episodes from the Simpsons annual Halloween special. Another screen seemed to have a slide show but it was not running.
Free on the street or at the VFW hall
Since people move through haunted attractions at different rates, your time will vary. Note: The time shown here represents the actual time spent moving forward through the attraction. Time spent waiting in queue lines, staging areas, intro scenes, rules rooms and when traffic jams cause patrons to come to a halt, has been subtracted.
LPR Score = 5.283
LPR stands for Length/Price Ratio. It represents perceived value of an event, by comparing length vs price of admission. Higher numbers represent more value per dollar. Actual quality and/or entertainment value of an event are not factors in this calculation. Click Here to see how this event compares to others visited this year by the staff of HauntedIllinois.com.
The rules room and one other early location were clearly set up to prevent groups from meeting in the haunt. Unfortunately, the dark maze portion of the haunt played havoc with these plans. Our group seemed to quickly pass through these sections while the group ahead of us got turned around and we soon caught up them on a couple of occasions.
Once you enter the haunt you are in the rules room. The room contains an animatronic skeleton that reads the rules. Both his mouth and his eyes are animated and it makes this a very good start to the experience. The haunt did not have any overarching theme but contained a number of different sections. Soon after entering the haunt you descend to the basement level. This provides some of the best staging in the haunt as the basement is brick construction. The old brick is the basis for several of the set pieces. This gave the area a very authentic feel. Along the way there was a good mix of animated props, actors and visual effects. The haunt contained both a squeeze section and a crawl. Patrons are warned about this before entering. I do not believe there is a pass through to avoid the crawl. There was a fog room with laser effects that also had an unstable floor. While worrying about your footing it is easy to be surprised by the actor hiding there. The middle section of the haunt was dominated by dark mazes. There were a few wrong turns so it is possible that groups can get separated or slowed down because of wrong turns. There were a number of well placed drop panels in the haunt which provided good places for scares. The haunt team used distractions effectively to ensure good scares. One section of the haunt contained what looked to be some nice preformed panels to line the walls giving the impression of that section being a crypt. The actors did a very good job of remaining in character even as they directed us through the haunt. People that visited the haunt in the previous year reported that there were a considerable number of changes this year.
