2018 Baldwin Asylum Review

Baldwin Asylum
2040 Lon Dr
Rantoul, IL 61866

Reviewed By:

Erin Davidson

Visibility / Location:

Leading up to the turn onto Lon Drive from the main road, you can't miss Baldwin due to the fact that it's located in what looks to be an abandoned department store; a huge building with an equally huge parking lot looms right off the turn. The lot is well lit and massive, leading up to a black-painted trailer with a fire truck light-bar selling tickets and merchandise. Tickets can be purchased there or via their website and ticketleap.

Wait Entertainment:

There was literally no wait when we visited, but Baldwin is set up to handle large crowds. From the ticket trailer, guests are shown through the front door into a large room with amusement park-style aisles marked off by a pipe fence. At the front of the large room is a massive screen playing a mash of horror clips and heavy metal.

Since people move through haunted attractions at different rates, your time will vary. LPR Score = 4.115

LPR stands for Length/Price Ratio. It represents perceived value of an event, by comparing length vs price of admission. Higher numbers represent more value per dollar. Scare Factor:

Crowd Control:

We had the unique experience of being literally the only guests in line and going through the haunt, so we were allowed to go through at our own pace. I did not notice any checkpoints in the haunt where staff might pause groups for spacing, though there were a handful of places I could see creating bottle-necks and back-up problems. Not handicap accessible.

From the gigantic line room, we were ushered into a tight space known as 'reception', with a mounted TV screen showing various security footage of what is assumed to be an insane asylum in chaos. At first, we thought this to be the 'rules room', but were quickly chased out by an actor marred up by torn scrubs and gore make-up, literally hanging from the wall. Mostly following the classic 'insane asylum' theme, the rooms featured smears of blood (and 'other'), filth, bodies in various states of mutilation, ect. The atmosphere and set were very detailed, with attention to different lighting techniques (the extremely slow strobe in the hallway featuring hanging bodies was particularly effective in elevating the pulse) and unique, hidden doorways (including tunnels guests have to find to advance, and camouflaged passages). The haunt was clearly short-staffed the night we visited (by at least ten actors, we were told later), but those who were present were dedicated to the parts, and costumed appropriately for the atmosphere. Having been a veteran of Haunts for most of my thirty-seven years, I am difficult to jump-scare; this haunt managed to succeed (hint: when you hear someone behind you, and you look, they aren't where you can see). I particularly enjoyed the unique set, as it takes you both 'inside and outside' the Asylum (without leaving the general building itself), the 'broken chapel' was a particular work of genius. Because of the gore factor, I would recommend this haunt for ages 13 and up.
