2017 Night Terrors Of Effingham Review

Night Terrors Of Effingham
Dead Center Of Village Square Mall
2090 S Banker St
Effingham, IL 62401

Visibility / Location:

Google Maps are accurate getting to the haunt. It's located inside the Village Square Mall, which has plenty of on-site parking. There weren't any signs from the road to show that there is a haunted house there, though.

Wait Entertainment:

They played some Rob Zombie music while you waited in line. There was a man in a dress with a Hannibal Lecter mask on walking around scaring people.

Crowd Control:

The groups were spaced out perfectly. We never ran into any other groups.

This year the mall seems even more like a ghost town than last year. There was a short line, so the wait wasn't very long. When we were sent inside, we had to listen to a clown on a TV monitor giving instructions and rules. The music outside was so loud that we didn't hear a word of the rules. For the safety of the patrons and actors, people need to be able to hear the rules. Most of the haunt is pretty dark which makes finding your way a little terrifying. There were random things hanging from the ceiling as you walked in darkness. Things were sticking out of the walls, just soft enough to feel but you had no clue what it was and that definitely made you want to walk faster. Parts of it seemed like a maze and we were turned around a couple times. We even had to walk through a refrigerator! It seemed like every time a scene changed, the smell in the room changed as well. I'm not sure if that was intentional, but it definitely added to the scare factor. One area smelled like an old attic, one smelled like death, another smelled like peppers, it was strange, but I liked it! At one point we were in a completely dark room with a bunch of glow in the dark hockey masks hanging from the ceiling, VERY creepy!! We couldn't tell if all of them were hanging from the ceiling or if they were actually people. That was probably my favorite part. There was a room that was filled with fog and had a green laser shooting across the room about 3 feet from the floor and it made the room look like a creepy swamp or something. There were actors emerging from the green mist. Very scary! There was a scene with a butcher tearing people apart with bloody guts all over. There was a strange man in a bath tub, that made me think of the glutton part of the movie Seven. There was a dentist pulling teeth from a screaming patient. There were tight spaces, misdirection by the actors and a real in your face traditional haunt! They really improved from last year and if you've never been to this one before, don't let the mall appearance fool you, GO!
