2016 KoK Presents Gates Of Hell Review

KoK Presents Gates Of Hell
Boone County Fair Grounds
8791 Il Rt 76
Belvidere, IL 61008

Visibility / Location:

Since we're local to the area, we knew where to find the Boone County Fairgrounds. When we got to the intersection of Bypass 20 and 76, we saw a flashing arrow sign that read "Welcome to The Gates of Hell" pointing toward the parking area. There were more flashing lights near the ticket booth. A couple of people in reflective vests were directing parking with flashlights. Since there's not much else going on at the fairgrounds, which are fairly secluded, all of the lights and activity would be hard to miss.

Wait Entertainment:

We visited on the first Sunday of the month, so we didn't have to wait long to get in. We saw one actress dressed as a clown and she followed the group ahead of us into the haunt, so we didn't see her for long. The haunt is inside of one of the livestock barns on the property, and they had a pretty neat brick facade at the entrance. They had strobe lights that flashed in tandem with lightning sound effects aimed at the facade, which added a really nice touch. The covered waiting area is in another livestock barn running directly parallel to the haunt barn, so most of the event is covered.

Crowd Control:

They spaced groups out pretty well. We did not run into any other groups while we were inside of the attraction.

This was our first time to Karnival of Karnage, despite being so close and hearing their name through our area for probably ten years. When my friend (whom I worked with at another haunted house in previous years) and I got to the entrance, we got our rules and we were informed that it was under new management and that some things inside were new. This made me wish that I had been there in previous years so I could see what the new owners had changed.

The tour started with a maze of black walls and an engulfing darkness. As we shuffled through, trying not to run into any walls or actors, we found a wide variety of scenes; such as a little girl's room, a butcher shop, a medical area, a circus area, and a backwoods section. There was a scene with a hidden exit that we really thought was clever. If we weren't familiar with the tricks of the industry, we probably would've been stuck in there for a little while. However, we had never seen anyone else with a hidden exit quite like that and we really thought it was quite clever.

There were a few impressive features throughout the event; like a spinning tunnel, a spark fence, and a couple of very loud startle effects. We were also impressed with the black light scenes that they had set up, like the spider room and the clown area. The finale was set up very well. We were completely distracted by one of the actors when we got attacked from the other direction.

For a small town haunt, these guys did a good job. There were a lot of old school scares and the acting consisted of a lot of screaming. The actors stayed focused and in character, which is more than I can say for even some big name haunts I've been to. Since we didn't know what to expect going in, we came out pleasantly surprised. Karnival of Karnage is a good mix of old school and high tech. I am anxious to see what the new owners will add to the show in years to come.
