2016 The Scream Haunted Adventure Review

The Scream Haunted Adventure
680 W Eldorado St
Decatur, IL 62522

Reviewed By:

Visibility / Location:

Parking lot was a good size, but full with no parking available. Not much of a line, so I'd have to assume this was due to staff parking. Event location was easy to find, right off the strip, with a large flashing arrow pointing at parking lot entrance. I didn't notice any signage along the way, but there was a large banner out front.

Wait Entertainment:

Wait entertainment consisted of costumed actors lurking thru the parking lot, interacting with the customers, and chasing them inside. Once inside, lobby entertainment consisted of clowns and various creatures moving thru the lines, scaring, chasing, and taking photos upon request. There was a large overhead flat screen playing the movie "Scream".

Admission:

General Admission is $14, with a Speed Pass option for $20. (Paranormal Warehouse Tour and Zombie Laser Tag also available)

Parking:

Free

Event Length:

19.5 Minutes

LPR:

LPR Score = 4.875

LPR stands for Length/Price Ratio. It represents perceived value of an event, by comparing length vs price of admission. Higher numbers represent more value per dollar. Actual quality and/or entertainment value of an event are not factors in this calculation. Click Here to see how this event compares to others visited this year by the staff of HauntedIllinois.com.

Scare Factor:

Medium

Crowd Control:

Crowd control was handled well, with each group progressing at their own speed, several minutes apart. No merging of others groups was incurred.

Summary:

I had mixed feelings about this haunted house. As one of my personal favorites, I was a bit disappointed. Let's start with the good stuff!

There were lots of props! I really enjoyed looking at the various scenes, and the way they were set up. I particularly liked the way lighting was used. For example, upon entering the haunted house, you find yourself facing a long dark hallway with a bright beam of light at the end, and a life-sized porcelain doll awaiting underneath. This is done again as you are exiting, with the silhouette of "The Saw" puppet at the far end. Very eerie. I liked it. Light play is also used thru-out the house, hinting the correct pathway as you make your way thru a winding maze of darkness. I also enjoyed the interactiveness of the house. We had to stoop down thru lowered entryways, crawl thru tunnels, and travel up and down stair cases (bypass options available). You don't see this in a lot of haunted houses, it's an interesting change of pace. I also enjoyed the music being played in the spinning tunnel room. I'm a bit of a rocker chic, so "Bodies" by "Drowning Pool really spiced things up for me. I also enjoyed the special effects such as the breathing wall, shifting floors, and dry ice giving a foggy haze effect.

Here's where I got a bit disappointed. Man I don't know how to say this nicely, but some... (no several) of the actors had some serious B.O. (body odor) issues going on. I understand it's hot in there, your running around, the costumes are sweaty, but this was bad. Overwhelmingly bad. To top it off, the clown room had a strong odor of cat urine. Several times we quickly passed thru rooms, just to escape the smell. I also noticed a lot of actors sitting down. Not on the floor, but in folding chairs. Being only two hours since opening, I was a bit surprised by this. Another disappointing aspect for me was the amount of young child actors. Maybe it's just me, but I find it takes away from the scare factor. Finally, I was not at all happy with the screaming in my ears. Yes, normally there are actors shouting loudly at you. Even screaming at times. However, there was more than once when someone leaned in, inches from my ear, and really belted out a good one. I found this to be more painful than scary.

All in all, we had a good time. The wait didn't seem too long, the props were great, we had a good laugh getting lost in the maze, and some of the costumes were really well done. As I mentioned before, "The Scream" has always been a personal favorite of mine, so giving a less than positive review was hard for me, however I'm still a big fan, and look forward returning in the future.
