2016 Scream Scene Review

Scream Scene
4701 Oakton Street
Skokie, IL 60076

Reviewed By:

Filer

Visibility / Location:

The haunt is easy to see from the street, as the words "Scream Scene" in giant neon letters are along the right hand side of the haunt location and are quite visible. Aside from this though, there is no signage along the route, and the haunt is in a location where street addresses are not easily visible, so if you're not using GPS you might miss it.

Wait Entertainment:

There were a few costumed actors outside and they all were milling about, moving in and out of the crowds and generally scaring visitors.

Admission:

$10

Parking:

Free

Event Length:

9 Minutes

LPR:

LPR Score = 3.156

LPR stands for Length/Price Ratio. It represents perceived value of an event, by comparing length vs price of admission. Higher numbers represent more value per dollar. Actual quality and/or entertainment value of an event are not factors in this calculation. Click Here to see how this event compares to others visited this year by the staff of HauntedIllinois.com.

Scare Factor:

Medium

Crowd Control:

Crowd control was good once past the ticket window, as the location for Scream Scene has metal railings along the entranceway which allow patrons to easily wind in and out of line. Patron flow was also good inside the haunt, with our group not encountering anyone in front of us or behind us during the entire haunt. The only area where there could be improvement is the area before the ticket window. There are no real lines, and it's easy to have people cut in front of you if you're not paying attention.

Summary:

Scream Scene has been around for 20 years now and it always manages to come up with something new. The haunt features multiple scenes, including a barber shop, a large clown area, a dot room, a room full of glowing hockey masks, and a tomb area with a living statue. All are well decorated, including some creative props and numerous fake figures propped up to look like real actors.

Highlights included a clever barber shop scene, some good misdirection in the dot room, and a striped maze in the clown area which included a couple of surprises in the form of a girl behind plexiglass and a clown dressed in the same color scheme as the walls.

New for this year was an entire second area that was made up to look like a hotel, including a waiting area, kitchen, laundry, and several hotel rooms, complete with carpeting and full furnishings. This was the highlight of the haunt, with some clever acting, some comedy moments including a chef that pops out of a refrigerator and some flying laundry in the laundry room, and some creepy moments in the bedrooms, including one room showing The Shining and another with an animated hanging torso suspended over the bed.

There are also a couple chainsaws in the haunt, which are a staple of the Scream Scene experience.

Most of the actors are younger (high school age or less), and costuming consists mainly of street clothing or some minimal outfits, rubber masks, and makeup. Acting was either of the jump scare variety or the loud screaming variety, although not to the point where with was too annoying. The mix was entertaining and there were actually some good startle scares and some clever hidden actors.

Overall, given that Scream Scene is populated by younger actors, it's not the most intense haunt for adult visitors, but for younger individuals it can be scary, and we personally witnessed quite a few visitors running out of the haunt and into the parking lot. However, if you're looking for a fun, entertaining haunt experience with milder scares, Scream Scene is a good choice, especially if you want to bring your family.

There is also a $30 VIP ticket option that includes Scream Scene, The Catacombs, and Hair Razor, which is an excellent value as it allows you to skip the lines (which can get long at all of them) for basically the same price as general admission.
