The Scream Queen
Visibility / Location:
Parking is ample and located behind the haunted house. There are multiple signs alongside the street in front of the haunted house, as well as other posters included around Alsip.
There wasn't any wait time entertainment during my visit to the haunted house. There was a very brief line at the beginning playing music that sounded oddly Christmas-like. The actor from the first room of the haunted house came out to talk to the line briefly as well.
LPR Score = 2.625
LPR stands for Length/Price Ratio. It represents perceived value of an event, by comparing length vs price of admission. Higher numbers represent more value per dollar. Pacing for the haunted house was solid. While a large group entered before my party, we were not allowed to enter the house until they were finished. No other groups bumped into us as we went in, either.
Scare in the Park was new to me this year, as a previously haunted house had been in this location last year. I felt like I had to give this new haunt a try, especially because of the price point. I didn't want to go in with incredibly high expectations, but I do have to say that there were some things that I enjoyed.
One thing that I liked was the space itself. The outside is decorated like a run-down house, complete with blood-splattered handprints. The interior living room (or rules room) was sparse but appropriate for the setting, which I enjoyed as well. I liked the comfortable-looking chair, as well as the ripped painting and broken television set. There were also multiple cool effects scattered throughout the house, such as a realistic fireplace and a cool drop ceiling effect. Lighting and smoke were also used throughout to add to the spookiness, which was a great decision.
Something that could be improved upon is a cohesive story line throughout. The rules room provided some warnings about how the residents were looking for "fresh meat," which many of the actors yelled as we went through the house. Still, a brief intro story or video would definitely add on to the effect. Something else that could be worked on is the interactivity of the actors. In many of the rooms, the actors just pointed to where we needed to go next (save for one confusing actress who tried to trick us into going in the wrong direction).
One thing I'm uncertain about is if I may have left through an incorrect doorway. At the end, my group exited through what looked like a portion of a wall and walked down an alleyway next to the haunted house. However, as we walked around the side, there was a door that looked like it was part of the haunt. I'm honestly not sure if my group exited incorrectly or if the haunt ended very abruptly.
Scream at the Park would be appropriate for a younger crowd, especially smaller children who enjoy haunted houses. Based on the setting where it is located, it's clear that Scream in the Park is trying to keep this haunted house family-friendly. Many of the actors inside were high-school aged or younger, so this would be a good place to bring younger children. The price is very reasonable, especially given that the haunt is very quick to walk through. I'm still curious about the ending and would love to see a more developed theme, but for $8, I had more fun than anticipated!
