Visibility / Location:
Visibility is a bit tricky for this haunt. It is located in an areas of garage type buildings with rolling doors and is not easily seen form the road. There is a large sign along the road with some human figure cutouts with signs on them pointing to the haunted house, but the haunt itself is located towards the rear of this row od garage type buildings, so visitors have to drive all the way to the back of the lot in hopes of seeing it. It can be missed if one doesn't look hard enough.
Also, there are signs along the opposite side of the road as well, which misleadingly make it seem like the haunt is on the other side of the street.
There were a couple of costumed actors wandering around outside and they did come and interact with our group briefly. There was no line to speak of, so there really wasn't any other type of wait entertainment.
LPR Score = 1.633
LPR stands for Length/Price Ratio. It represents perceived value of an event, by comparing length vs price of admission. Higher numbers represent more value per dollar. Actual quality and/or entertainment value of an event are not factors in this calculation. Click Here to see how this event compares to others visited this year by the staff of HauntedIllinois.com.
There was no crowd there so no need for crowd control. At the time of our visit our group was the only group there.
D.E.A.D Rising is a haunt that somehow gets more expensive every year without managing to offer more in the way of haunting. It consists of a series of rooms with various themes, including a clown room, a boiler room, a little girl's room, and more. Overall there are about ten rooms in the haunt. Most are minimally decorated, with a few static props and perhaps one or two actors in each.
Some of the better rooms included an opening scene with a priest and an altar, a room all in white with a creepy nun, and a room with a gypsy like character and a huge giant spider prop coming out of the wall. This was perhaps the most detailed room in the haunt and was rather unique. Also good was the opening bit where visitors boarded an "elevator" along with a handyman who proceeded to have trouble with the elevator door, having to stop and take out his mallet to fix it. A decent comedy routine in the beginning that didn't go on too long and that was helped by the fact that the actor playing the handyman didn't really try to engage with visitors while "fixing" the elevator - he just got on with it. Sometimes, as in this case, the lack of talking is a bonus in terms of selling the scene.
Actors were mostly younger, with basic costumes or simply ripped clothing covered in blood, along with facial makeup. A few actors did have other types of costumes (such as clown costumes) and some wore simple masks. Most of the scares were of the startle variety, with actors hiding them jumping out. Other actors simply did a lot of screaming to get out of whatever area we were in.
Overall there was nothing too remarkable about D.E.A.D. Rising - no concrete theme running through the haunt and many of the standard rooms that one sees in various haunts. The best looking characters were the ones outside of the haunt, with a large demonlike figure, a clown and a zombie with a chain waiting for visitors before and after.
To be frank, this haunt should fall more into the under $10 category. It's quite short, with the seven minute length also including a rather pointless scene where we were marched around the entrance to the haunt, following a guy banging cymbals together, only to then be let inside. Younger kids might enjoy some of the scares, and the giant spider did look really cool, but there was really nothing inside to justify the $15 price tag for entry.
